Red Wine by Oberto from Piedmont, Italy. The Barolo Albarella is made from 0.8 hectares of densely-planted and meticulously pruned vines, which makes the total production very limited. The vineyard is in the village of Barolo, just below the famous Canubi vineyard, with which it shares its southwestern exposure and clay soils. Hand-picked grapes are double-sorted and placed into stainless steel tanks for an extended maceration of up to 350 hours on the skins. After primary fermentation in tank, the wine is racked into new oak barrels for the malolactic fermentation. The wine is then racked into larger French and Slovenian oak boti for a 24-month aging period, follwed by 2 months in tank, and 6 months in bottle.

The Morandina estate takes its name from the original Morando family, residents in the same area of Piemonte since 1580. The firm's holdings now extend over 21 hectares of vineyards covering rolling hills in the heart of the most prestigious production areas, including Castiglione Tinella for production of this delicious Moscato d'Asti. The use of a slow, natural fermentation leads to enticing and persistant bubbles, and the wine itself is as fresh as a daisy, with vibrant floral aromatics, sweetness and just 5.5% alcohol. Certainly if demand in America is any guide, Moscato might even eclipse Pinot Grigio although that particular phenomenon shows no sign of abating. We ve turned to an estate for whom Moscato d Asti has been a way of life for centuries rather than a passing fad.

Although the first written records of wine production in Vacqueyras date back to 1414, the Romans probably began winemaking there as early as the second century BC. Today, a great Vacqueyras, like this magnificent example, strikes the perfect balance between power and precise fruit expression. And that's exactly what you have here. Domaine de Vervine is a small estate nestled at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, just outside the village of Sarrians. The vineyards are planted amidst sun dried garrigue which lends herbal complexity to this juicy Rhône red. This wine is ready to enjoy now, but given time the ripe red fruit will develop notes of liquorice, pepper and spice. Locals would serve with daube provençale, game or wild boar.

The Feudo di Santa Tresa estate has around 50 hectares of vineyards based on a rich, red soil which has ideal characteristics: a 40-100 centimetre surface layer of light red sandy loam on a well-drained limestone base, which helps to guarantee a constant supply of water. The volcanic soil is highly fertile and the harsh sun is tempered by the cooling sea breezes, making the quality of the vines and grapes is so exceptional that minimal intervention is the order of the day and organic production the natural result. Once in the cellar, the grapes are gently destemmed, but not crushed. The two grape varieties are vinified separately. Fermentation in each case is initiated by the addition of selected yeasts and takes place at a temperature not exceeding 17-18 degrees C for about 10 days. 50% of the Grillo is then kept in oak barriques for 3-4 months. No malolactic fermentation takes place in order to maintain the acidity. The two wines are blended together at the end of January.

The impressive buildings of Château Margaux are a worthy preamble to the property's majestic wines. The estate has been growing grapes for centuries, but only in such fancy surroundings since the 19th century. Wine quality went up and down until 1978 when the estate came into the hands of André Mentzelopoulos. Since then it has soared thanks to lavish investment in the winemaking facilities and vineyards. Now André's daughter, Corinne, is in charge of an estate that is considered by many to be the epitome of Bordeaux. "If any red Bordeaux could be said to encapsulate everything that makes this region unique in the wine world it would have to be Margaux" (Andrew Jefford). Appointing Paul Pontallier as head of production was a masterstroke.

Decanter magazine awarded the previous vintage of this "darling of a wine" a stunning 92 points, and the 2013, just out, is every bit as impressive. It's all down to a patch of ancient and forgotten Aglianico and Primitivo vines, discovered by talented winemaker Mario Ercolino while tramping through the northern Puglian countryside. Realising their potential, he tracked down the owner and persuaded him to coax them back into production. Between them they christened the vineyard Somaro, after the rare breed of donkeys that once worked the land. Mario matured this wine for six months in small French oak casks, bottling with minimal filtration to preserve its flavour and complexity. Enjoy with roast beef, spicy pasta or a hearty casserole.

Its previous owner, Mr. Soubrane was a carpenter who believed in felling his trees by moonlight, claiming this gave the best quality wood. His practice gave the property its name, meaning "sing to the moon." He sold his land to José Sanfins, director at third growth property, Château Cantenac Brown. Forty year old vines thrive in the poor gravel-sand soils. The vines dig deep for water and nutrients making them strong and competitive. Production is limited to just 400 cases. The small size of the vineyards allow Jose Sanfins to produce small quantities of exceptional fruit, and so the best quality wine. Vintages 2007; 2008; 2010 Taste The blend of grapes from this outstanding offering from the tiny four-hectare property each contribute to the wine whilst working in perfect harmony. Red Car says 2012 was a great year in Sonoma for finicky Pinot Noir, with a long season of slow ripening because it never got too cold. (And the winery boasts bottles made from grapes grown in highly monitored cool-climate vineyards off the coast of the Pacific.) This Sonoma Coast Pinot is a blend from Red Car's most notable vineyards in Fort Ross, Freestone and Occidental, all of which maintain organic, biodynamic and sustainable growing practices. Medium bodied and velvety, with dry tannins that round out the fruity finish, it is downright alluring from start to finish. You'll get aromas of cherry and rose hip that flow into a slightly herbal taste with more cherry and raspberry. The grapes are hand sorted, fermented in open-top containers with native yeast, then aged 11 months in mostly neutral French oak, so this wine is really a product of its environment, with minimal manipulation. Just 69 cases were produced, so grab a bottle fast. tip of the tongue This Pinot Noir is worthy of an excellent meal, so bring it to a favorite BYO restaurant, or break it out when you're cooking something a little more elaborate than usual. Solaia comes from a 20 hectare vineyard within the Tenuta Tignanello estate and was first produced in 1978 - a Cabernet based red, it was revolutionary for Tuscany. The wine's immense reputation is due to a number of factors, starting with superior terroir and strict grape selection. A cellar dedicated purely to the production of this wine was completed in time for the 2009. You can see the attention to detail. Each vineyard parcel was vinified separately, and special conical shaped fermentation vats helped extract only the finest tannins. Ageing in French oak barriques for 18 months lent a further backbone of silken tannins and vanilla oak complexity.
