Solaia comes from a 20 hectare vineyard within the Tenuta Tignanello estate and was first produced in 1978 - a Cabernet based red, it was revolutionary for Tuscany. The wine's immense reputation is due to a number of factors, starting with superior terroir and strict grape selection. A cellar dedicated purely to the production of this wine was completed in time for the 2009. You can see the attention to detail. Each vineyard parcel was vinified separately, and special conical shaped fermentation vats helped extract only the finest tannins. Ageing in French oak barriques for 18 months lent a further backbone of silken tannins and vanilla oak complexity.
