The Concord Grape, Vitis 'Concord', is a well-known, high quality blue-black grape that is delicious for fresh eating, juice, jelly or jam. Its berry size and clusters are medium to large. Good for home gardens because it is a reliable producer and vigorous grower. Ripening in late September, it is one of the oldest cultivated American grape varieties still commonly grown. Some Missouri vineyards grow this Concord for producing sweet after dinner wines. It is also grown in the Finger Lakes area of New York, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Southwest Michigan, and the Yakima Valley of Washington. The skin of a Concord grape is typically dark blue or purple, and often is covered with a lighter colored bloom which can be rubbed off. It is a slip-skin variety, meaning that the skin is easily separated from the fruit. It's best to train the stronger cane of the two canes that develop from the plant to a strong stake, five to six feet tall. Remove any suckers growing from the base of the canes. This grape tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, but must have good drainage. Grapes are primarily grown for fruit production in home fruit gardens where they provide good ornamental value: bold summer foliage, showy fruit, some fall color and shaggy, twisted trunking and branching often best seen in winter. Grapes need a good support system like fences, walls, trellises, arbors or other structures. The grape vines can be quite attractive year-round and can provide good cover, screening, or shade to areas around the home. Grapes need full sunlight and high temperatures to ripen, so plant on southern slopes, the south side of windbreaks, or the south sides of buildings. Situated in western Romania just to the east of the town of Timisoara Cramele Recas is a very impressive new winery on an old site. In the last 10 years, under the charge of pioneering Englishman Phillip Cox and his Romanian wife, Elvira, known as 'Elfie', both the vineyard and winery have been completely, and exhaustively modernised in order to be able to fully control the production process using the latest methods. The winery has been fully fitted out with stainless steel, automatic temperature controlled tanks for fermenting and storing the wine. The primary vinification facility has the best possible equipment for gently crushing, destemming, pressing the grapes- in order to keep all the quality in the grapes. Add to this the talents of Australian winemaker Hartley Smithers and his Romanian winemaker wife Nora and you have the recipe for making great wine. It seems Recas is a very romantic place. Yet another exquisite vintage from Château Chantelune and a demonstration of the excellence that can be found in the Margaux appellation. Only 400 cases have been release, making this a rare addition to a collection. If you like Château Margaux, you'll love this! About the Producer A jewel located on top of the highest hill in Margaux, Château Chantelune is a unique property. Its previous owner, Mr. Soubrane was a carpenter who believed in felling his trees by moonlight, claiming this gave the best quality wood. His practice gave the property its name, meaning "sing to the moon." He sold his land to José Sanfins, director at third growth property, Château Cantenac Brown. Forty year old vines thrive in the poor gravel-sand soils. The vines dig deep for water and nutrients making them strong and competitive. Production is limited to just 400 cases. The small size of the vineyards allow Jose Sanfins to produce small quantities of exceptional fruit, and so the best quality wine. Vintages 2007; 2008; 2009; 2010 Taste A caressing texture, this wine is like no other. Dark fruits, spice and vanilla create a lush swirl of creamy forest fruit compote that is intense and long-lasting in equal measure. Food & Wine Pair with seared duck breast or a French classic, cassoulet.
