Situated in western Romania just to the east of the town of Timisoara Cramele Recas is a very impressive new winery on an old site. In the last 10 years, under the charge of pioneering Englishman Phillip Cox and his Romanian wife, Elvira, known as 'Elfie', both the vineyard and winery have been completely, and exhaustively modernised in order to be able to fully control the production process using the latest methods. The winery has been fully fitted out with stainless steel, automatic temperature controlled tanks for fermenting and storing the wine. The primary vinification facility has the best possible equipment for gently crushing, destemming, pressing the grapes- in order to keep all the quality in the grapes. Add to this the talents of Australian winemaker Hartley Smithers and his Romanian winemaker wife Nora and you have the recipe for making great wine. It seems Recas is a very romantic place. It must be the wine!
