Red Wine by Scholium Project from California. We have sustained the excellent decision that we made in 2012 to base this wine on two Suisun Valley vineyards farmed by Steve Tenbrink. This year, we took a step to make the wine even more interesting: most of the wine is the result of cofermentation of Petite Sirah and Cabernet, not blending. There is also Hudson Syrah cofermented with the Suisun grapes. The final wine is about 50% Petite Sirah, 43% Cabernet, and 7% Syrah. The wine is more burly than the delicate 2011 and a little more muscular but also more layered and complex than the elegantly balanced 2012.

Ros Wine by Bravium from Central Coast, California. Santa Lucia Highlands is notable for its cooling fog and the afternoon breezes that sweep from Monterey Bay across the vineyards. Soil is Arroyo Seco Sandy Loam. This wine is produced from some of the most renowned vineyards in the appellation, including Rosella's Vineyard, which is owned and farmed by Gary and Rosella Franscioni. The growing season here is one of the longest in California, allowing for full flavor development on the vine. In the winery, whole cluster Pinot Noir was gently pressed upon arrival at the winery. Fermentation in a combination of neutral oak vessels and stainless steel fermenters was followed by gravity racking to tank. The 2015 Bravium Santa Lucia Highlands Rose of Pinot Noir possesses a classic pink salmon color and very bright berry, tree fruit, and yeast-derived aromatic notes. Fresh and lively fruit flavors include peach pie with a creamy texture. This smooth and lightly textured wine is precise and persistent on the mid-palate and is balanced by crisp acidity and a clean, pleasing finish.

Translated, De Morgenzon means simply the morning sun and was so named because it is the first part of the Stellenboschkloof Valley to see the sun due to its high altitude and aspect. The vineyards cover the top southern and eastern slopes of Ribbokkop, overlooking the pinnacle of Kanonkop from where a cannon was fired to alert the farms in the region that a ship had put into Table Bay. The estate's owners (Wendy & Hylton Applebaum) are focused on producing top quality wines but are somewhat experimental in their approach. The vineyards are nurtured on a constant diet of classical music. Just taste that glissando!

Celler Ronadelles is a small, family-owned and run winery that lies in the shadow of the impressive Montsant mountain range. The winery came to life in 2002 and has gradually grown and developed to the present day with its modern, elegant and innovative range of wines PETIT de Joanne Cox (Joanne is the wife of the winemaker and co-owner of the winery).These quality vineyards of Montsant, in north east Spain, are planted at an altitude of between 500 600 meters above sea-level, for the cooler air needed to moderate the summer heat, and to allow for a more extended ripening period. This rich, complex, natural red wine is a wonderful expression of the Pomerol Bordeaux style (one of the most prestigious wine regions on Bordeaux's right bank). But this is no French wine. Au contraire, it's from an up-and-coming winemaker organically farming the sloping Babrak Vineyard in the Santa Cruz mountains. Dark, juicy merlot is balanced by the complex perfume and structure of Cabernet Franc, resulting in a crisp, somewhat rustic wine with dreamy aromas of cherries, berries, herbs, spices and a hint of tobacco. Winemaker Jason Edward Charles considers himself a farmer first, and believes in making wine with very little intervention. The vines have been growing in limestone gravel and rock for 20 years, and were hand picked when the fruit tasted perfectly ripe. In the cellar the fruit was de-stemmed and gently pressed into neutral barrels. This 50/50 blend of Merlot and Cab Franc was co-fermented with natural yeasts, aged on the lees and racked only once before bottling un-fined and unfiltered without added sulfur. This wine is one of his very first public offerings, and he only made 32 cases, so if you like to be first to a really good thing, act fast! did you know? The label design is by award-winning visual artist Michael Cina. tip of the tongue Just like wines from Pomerol, this wine is a great match for meat and can stand up to strong cheeses. Don't drink it with anything too delicate, or the wine will overwhelm the food.

Red Wine by Casa Castillo from Jumilla, Spain. Jose Maria Vicente is the third generation owner and operator of Casa Castillo, a farm that began as a rosemary plantation, but one that has evolved into the preeminent estate in the DO of Jumilla. While the smell of rosemary still lingers in the air, the pale, rocky soils surrounding his house and cellar are now planted with vines. When Jose Maria's grandfather purchased Casa Castillo in 1941 there was already a winery, cellar and some scattered vineyards on the property dating to the 1870s, established by French refugees fleeing the plight of phylloxera in their native land. In 1985 Jose and his father began to replant the vineyards and expand them with the goal of making wine on the property. In 1991 they bottled their first commercial vintage.

River Grandeur wines are named after the majestic Brede river which runs through the Viljoensdrift vineyards. Viljoensdrift is a family-owned farm and winery with brothers Fred and Manie Viljoen at the helm. Manie, as viticulturist, manages the vines and deciduous fruit, while Fred works his magic in the cellar. In 1998 Fred and Manie opened the cellar door after 30 years of supplying grapes to the local co-op and now they are reaping the benefits of their commitment to and passion for wine winemaking.

Red Wine by Black Sheep Finds from Central Coast, California. In 2008 Black Sheep Finds decided to start bottling small amounts of Holus Bolus Syrah from single vineyards. In an effort to highlight particular qualities of places and vineyards that we think are unique we offer three distinct wines: White Hawk, Watch Hill and Rim Rock. The White Hawk vineyard is located in Los Alamos Valley in northern Santa Barbara County. It is planted on sandy soils between 900 and 1000 feet in elevation and receives a somewhat cool maritime influence. The vines are farmed sustainably and organically in most vintages. The grapes are from a selection of the old California Estrella clone, vine age approximately 10 years old.

Red Wine by Stark-Conde from South Africa. This is a blend from 2 different vineyards at different elevations on our Jonkershoek Valley farm. The higher elevation vineyard has a finely textured decomposed granite soil and tends to produce a more elegant wine with softer tannin, while the lower vineyard is very rocky and gives a denser, fruitier, more tannic wine. White Wine by Scholium Project from Sonoma County, California. This was another antastic year for Farina, the rocky, east-facing Sauvignon Blanc vineyard high up on Sonoma Mountain. The vineyard produced a third more fruit than it normally does- and we were offered more rows by Joe Votek, who farms it. This allowed us to make the most LSB that we have ever made (and an additional wine from the new section. It is still fermenting, and so, unnamed). The quality of everything was superb. Once again, because the growing season was so cool and graceful, we harvested late and without any haste. The intensity of all flavor and the integrity of the acidity are both very high. In 2012, the wine had a granular power; this year the wine has much more smoothness and beauty- a wine the Italians would call morbida. The wine is not subtle, but nor is it loud.

Red Wine by 1000 Stories from North Coast, California. Batch #004 is the first release of the 2014 vintage and once again Mendocino Zinfandel plays a big role in the blend with classic oldvineyards such as Sargentini and Rucker vineyards. Head trained and dry farmed, these vineyards give nice raspberry fruits. Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel also makes a big impact on the blend in Batch #004. Dry Creek is a classic and well known source for great Zinfandel and has added a new dimension to the 1000 Stories blend. Black fruits with distinct notes of black pepper and even a bit of clove spice add complexity to the blend. Also new to this batch is the addition of Lodi Zinfandel, with its iconic bold flavors and big character. Rounding out the blend are some Zinfandels from Colusa County, Syrah from Paso Robles and Petite sirah from Mendocino. A portion of the wine is aged in French and American oak for 6 months and then aged further in bourbon barrels. We've selected new and used bourbon barrels for these small batches of Zinfandel, which impart characteristics specific to these barrels: charred vanilla, dried herbs and a hint of caramel.

White Wine by Poco a Poco from North Coast, California. This wine offers aromas of lemon, minerality, orange zest and honey dew. The Palate has good acidity but with richness to provide a seemless palate and clean finish without being shrill. The grapes are from the Ghianda Rose Vineyard in Mendocino. The vines are 20 to 30 years old and are farmed Biodynamically. The wine underwent a native primary and secondary fermentation and aging in neutral French oak.

Nicholas Rossignol found that the 2008 vintage did not pose too many problems apart from some botrytis which was dealt with by rigorous triage of the grapes in the vineyard and on arrival at the cellars. The domaine Rossignol-Trapet has, for several years now, been farmed biodynamically and we are convinced that it is this that keeps their vines producing fruit of a quality and health far superior to many of their neighbours. Red Wine by Lioco from Central Coast, California. Aromas of oil-cured olive, dried fig, and graphite. Flavors of rhubarb, dried blueberry, and pie crust. A hidden vineyard near the town of Aptos, a mere 4.5 miles from the Pacific. Syrah clones Estrella and Syrah Noir planted in the late 1990's. Soil is a deep colluvial fan of sand and calcareous marine deposits with excellent drainage. Exchange of fog/sun ensures proper vine respiration & very even ripening. Red Wine by Neyers from Napa Valley, California. Here is an attractive, traditional Bordeaux-style wine from the Napa Valley, produced entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown on organically-farmed vineyards in Conn Valley. Most of the vines are 25 years old, and are planted in soil that combines basalt, gravel and clay. Yields were barely two tons per acre so the finished wine is lush and deeply aromatic, with traces of cassis, raspberry and cedar. There's a softness that is especially attractive right now, and the wine is complex enough to turn a lot of heads.

Red Wine by Maison Roche de Bellene from Burgundy, France - regions. The entry-level red Burgundy comes from vineyards in the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits. The vines range in age from 56 to 88 years and are farmed sustainably. The major part (80%) of this wine is matured in barriques (15% of which is new oak) and the remainder is done in stainless steel. This maintains a pure style with bright fruit and a fine texture.

White Wine by Black Sheep Finds from Central Coast, California. 2013 is the fourth vintage of our Holus Bolus blanc and it is our best one yet. Roussanne is a grape native to the Rhone Valley of France (Hermitage, St. Joseph, Chateauneuf-du-Pape) and sparsely planted outside of there with only 300 acres in California. Black Sheep Finds found a great new vineyard source for their Roussanne: the much heralded Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley. This is a block that for the past decade has gone into Qupe's Hillside Estate Roussanne and we are very fortunate to have just under an acre there to work with. The block is biodynamically farmed with lovely goats patrolling the vineyard in the winter months.

Red Wine by Tapiz from Argentina, South America. To celebrate the addition of Jean Claude Berrouet (ex-Petrus) as Consultant Winemaker, Tapiz released a new Alta Collection line of wines in 2013. The alta (high-altitude) fruit comes from Tapiz's sustainably-farmed estate vineyards in Uco Valley, Mendoza. Chief Winemaker Fabian Valenzuela and Jean Claude work together to create a beautiful tapiz (tapestry) between the wine's intense fruit and its oak aging.

Ros Wine by Balo from North Coast, California. The soil profile includes a combination of Perry Gulch loam and Boontling loam soil with the majority of the vineyard planted on the Perry Gulch soil. The property sits on a river bench and as a result, contains a considerable amount of river rock from the days of the creek's formation. In some places these rocks are so plentiful that they're mixed with the soil all the way up to the surface. Balo Vineyards is an 8 acre, family owned vineyard located near the town of Philo, CA in Anderson Valley. Originally planted in 1998, the vineyard is comprised of five different clones of Pinot Noir including 115, 777, 828, Martini and Pommard 5 on 101-14 rootstock. The low vigor bench-land site, combined with our commitment to meticulous, organic farming practices, produces world class fruit.

Red Wine by D-Cubed Cellars from Napa Valley, California. The Korte Ranch is a classic old St. Helena Vineyard, planted around 1910. Korte Ranch is head-trained and dry-farmed planted on the St. George rootstock and produces wonderful Zinfandel. The 2010 Korte Ranch Zinfandel has aromas of blackberries, cherries, wild mushrooms and with sage hints of vanilla and cedar. It is full bodied with flavors of berries, dark cherries and cinnamon that carry throughout the long finish.

When it comes to spotting great buys from Bordeaux, we like to think we're ahead of the game. Our man on the ground, Jean-Marc Sauboua (JMS), was born and bred there and his little black book of names and addresses reads like a Who's Who. While cruising vineyards of the Blaye region, directly across the Gironde estuary from the Haut-Médoc, JMS paid a visit to three lovely ladies at Haut Prieur. Mesdames Baudin, Bonnisset and Jean-Baptiste showed him their 8 hectares of old vines, explained their environmentally friendly approach to farming, and after a delicious lunch and extensive tasting a deal was struck.
