On land freed from American Indians upon the orders of George Washington, the town of Ovid was formed in 1794, after military lots were numbered by Simeon DeWitt and his assistants. In 1860, construction was completed on three brick buildings that became known as the Three Bears, which served as the town's courthouse, eventually served as the Seneca County Seat, and now serve as the Town of Ovid municipal offices. Gradually, more settlers came, cleared land, built roads, started businesses, and founded churches and schools. Bordered by the Seneca and Cayuga Lakes, where barges were used to transport goods, the town developed a vibrant farming community with productive orchards and vineyards. Tourism flourished, and summer homes were built by those looking to escape the city. One of these summer homes was that of Herman Westinghouse, who worked together with his brother George Westinghouse on their company's myriad inventions.

Excerpt from State of Michigan: Laws Relating to Orchards and Vineyards An Act to authorize and regulate a county agricultural department. (Act 67, P.A. 1913.) The People of the State of Michigan enact: 7854. Section 1. The boards of supervisors of the several counties of this state are hereby authorized to appropriate from funds of their respective counties, or to assess and cause to be spread upon the taxable property of their respective counties, a sufficient sum of money to carry out the purposes of this act: Provided, however, That there shall not be so appropriated, raised or assessed in any county in any one year more than fifty cents on each one thousand dollars or major portion thereof of the assessed valuation of the real and personal property of such county, but in no case to exceed two thousand dollars, in addition to the salary mentioned in this act. 7855. Sec. 2. Each of said boards of supervisors so making such appropriation or assessment, shall also elect one qualified person for each county, respectively, to be known as farm commissioner, who shall hold his office for two years and shall receive such annual salary as said of board of supervisors shall determine, not exceeding two thousand dollars. 7856. Sec. 3. The fund so appropriated shall be known as the farm development fund, and the same may be used to enable said commissioner to defray his actual expenses, aside from salary, and carry out the purposes of this act. 7857. Sec. 4. The salary of such commissioner shall be paid out of the general fund of such county, and as other county salaries are paid. 7858. Sec.5. Such commissioner shall be a person not less than twenty-five years of age, an experienced practical man who, in the opinion of said board, is versed in all matters pertaining to farming pursuits, the growing of agricultural products and fruits suitable in such county, and one who is versed in the knowledge of soil fertility, rotation of crops, fertilizers.

White Wine by Bernardus from Central Coast, California. Santa Lucia Highlands' two most renowned growers, Gary Pisoni and Gary Franscioni, have joined forces on an exciting new vineyard located just south of the celebrated Garys' Vineyard in the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands. It is called Soberanes Vineyard. We at Bernardus are honored to be among the few wineries to receive both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from this exciting new star of the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation. We have chosen a block planted with two selections of the highly-regarded Wente clone of Chardonnay which is known for its small clusters of tiny grapes. This clone, along with the highest quality farming practices, provides us with a very intense wine exhibiting the finest quality of flavors and aromas. On the nose we find scents are of ripe peach and baked green apple, accented by notes of creme brulee. The palate is highly focused with concentrated flavors of candied citrus fruits, caramel, toasty oak and hints of mineral supported by a crisp, refreshing acidity.

If the winery were to harvest all of their Pinot Noir grapes and make one wine this is the wine it would be. They achieve this on a micro scale by selecting small parcels of fruit from every combination of rootstock/scion, slope, soil profile, and vine age on the property. They then vinify, age, and bottle this wine separately from our other lots. This bottling is always the most representative of the growing year. It incorporates every element of the farm for better or worse. It is the most accurate representation of Johan Vineyards' terroir.

Red Wine by Bernardus from Central Coast, California. The Santa Lucia Highlands are known as one of the premier Pinot Noir appellations of the world. One reason for this lofty reputation is Rosella's Vineyard. Gary Franscioni planted his home ranch, named for his lovely wife, in the heart of the Highlands. Gary's home vineyard is planted with a selection of the best available Pinot Noir clones and farmed with unparalleled passion and attention to detail. We at Bernardus are fortunate to have access to three small blocks: 2 planted with clone 777, and the third with the celebrated Pisoni clone. Each block is individually monitored for ripeness in order to hand-pick each clone at its perfect ripeness level. The grapes are sorted at the winery and fermented in small individual fermenters using specially selected yeasts. Once fermentation and pressing are complete, each lot is aged separately for 10 months in the finest French oak barrels. Each barrel is evaluated individually and the final selection is made through a lengthy series of tasting trials. The robe of our 2011 Rosella's is a deep crimson. On the nose we find aromas of candied red cherry fruits along with notes of oak and spice. The palate is very full and complex, exuding flavors of red cherry and berries, accented by notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. This is a beautifully intense wine that will age wonderfully for many years to come.

Red Wine by A Tribute to Grace from Central Coast, California. This vineyard represents the second expression in what the winery calls the Grandfather series. Vineyards harking back to days of olde, where vines were planted in their most natural form: own-rooted, head-trained, wide enough spacing to easily pick into wooden boxes and organic since day dot. Hofer Ranch was planted in the pre-Prohibition days when Cucamonga Valley was a bastion of grape farming. It took a lot of acres to raise a family says current steward Paul Hofer, whose Grandfather planted the vineyard. It was 300 acres in its heyday, and now just 5 acres remain. Planted in sand, a root structure 35 feet deep, surrounded by ancient Eucalyptus and Pink Peppercorn trees.

Red Wine by Evening Land Vineyards from Oregon. 2013 La Source Pinot Noir comes from the old vines planted at the highest part of the hill, where the vines have the most exposure to the wind and where the soils are their shallowest. The Seven Springs Vineyard, farmed biodynamically and organically since 2007, is planted on iron-rich, volcanic soil, with basalt mother rocks. The biodynamic farming of the vineyard showed its worth when the rains of 2013 threatened the vintage, as this method gave the pinot noir a thick exterior and made it resilient to the harmful weather. Evening Land Pinot Noirs are hand-picked, hand-sorted, and destemmed, then treated to a 4-5 day cold soak in open-top oak and concrete fermenters before fermentation begins naturally from indigenous yeasts. Twice daily, gentle punchdowns throughout fermentation encourage soft extraction of tannins. Aging of this wine occurred in 30% new French oak barrels for 16 months, which preserves the elegance of the wine.
