Krishna Disguised as a Gopi Teasing Radha Watercolor Painting Rendered in Marwar idiom of Rajasthani art style, pursuing the theme, style, and everything of an early nineteenth century miniature from Jodhpur, in its exactness except the painting’s size and the background color of the circle in the center containing the figures of Radha and Krishna, the painting portrays a grieving Radha for Krishna’s failure to reach there despite the promise he had made her, and Krishna disguised as a Gopi standing before her. Radha had brought with her lotuses for Krishna but the same now lies on the ground. She is unable to raise her head and dispel her disappointment which further aggravates when she thinks how for him she had adorned herself like a bride and had come so far in the night. The full large moon and the colorful nature around make her more miserable. The night is advancing and she does not know if he would join her or if she shall have to pass the night in this grove of trees all alone save a few compassionate cows as eagerly awaiting Krishna’s arrival. Tibetan Buddhist Two Armed Mahakala in Cremation Ground Thangka Painting Mahakala comes from the Sanskrit maha (great) and kala (death or time) which translates that he is a deity beyond time. In Tibet, he is also called the Nagpo Chenpo, or the Great Black One, and is revered as guardian and protector. He is affiliated with Hindu god Shiva. According to tradition, he dwells in the cremation grounds. In this thangka, he is depicted with two arms and two legs. On his sides is a vulture and a lion, colored black to symbolize darkness or death. Mahalaka is surrounded by bright flames, representing the fire of dissolution. As in this piece, he is depicted with a wrathful and fierce expression that signals his might and power to overcome negativity along the path of enlightenment. His skin is blue that represents the eternal Dharmakaya. He sports an aflame beard and eyebrows to signal his transformative power to turn the five negativities into five wisdoms. Goddess Durga as Mahishasur-Mardini Patachitra Painting The merciless Durga brings the great Mahishasura to His knees. Her simhavahana (lion-mount) has him between its teeth, while the dashabhujadharini (the one possessed of ten arms) push Him down with Her feet and drives the spear end of Her trishoola (trident) into Him. Helplessly, the proud Mahishasura looks up at the feminine victor. The work of art that you see on this page is a pattachitra of the Mahishasuramardini from Orissa. ‘Mardini’ is the Sanskrit word for players, while the prefix ‘Mahisha’ means buffalo. This Roopa (form) of the Devi is deeply worshipped in the Eastern Delta region, of which pattachitra is a traditional folk art form. The sheer level of detail in this pattachitra makes this a collector’s item: from the embroidery of Mahishasuramardini’s saree to the minuscule motifs across the background. A superbly detailed temple entrance structure, complete with pillars and archway, and a temple top, frame the central ensemble. A powerful, lifelike composure characterizes each countenance in this painting. Chemchok Heruka with Consort-Tibetan Buddhist Thangka Painting In Tibetan Buddhism, Chemchok Heruka is most notably known to be the focal divinity in the Fifty-eight Wrathful Deities mandala where he is the furious aspect of Samantabhadra. These 58 deities are said to be wrathful deities one can meet in death and rebirth. He is also known as the Mahottara Heruka. Meanwhile, in the Guhyagarbha Tantra, he is the main deity among the herukas of the Eight Commandments of Accomplishments (Nyingmapa lineage) in Tibet. Take a closer look at the thangka and notice that he is depicted with nine heads, all wrathful. Eighteen arms and eight legs can also be seen in the painting. Following terton tradition (or a person who was a follower of Padmasambhava, the founder of 8th-century Nyingmapa), deities such as Chemchok Heruka may take on varying forms depending on the needs of the times. The wings remain consistent in most depictions, as seen in this one behind the arms. On his waist is a skin of the tiger. Another notable element in this thangka is his consort Namshyalma in a union position. Varaha Avatar of Vishnu Seated on Lotus Kerala Mural Painting Lord Varaha, the third of Vishnu’s dashavataras, is the most instantly recognizable of the incarnations. The word ‘Varaha’ is Sanskrit for boar; and while some iconographies feature Varaha as a pig-shaped deity, the painting that you see on this page is of an anthropomorphic boar-headed human-bodied entity. Lord Varaha is possessed of eight arms (ashtabhujadhari) and clad in a flame-colored dhoti. In fact, it is the predominant color in the palette of this mural. It is to be found in the palms of His numerous hands, the snout of the boar face, and the lifelike petals of the lotus-bloom throne. A gorgeous gradient of the same shades and tints characterizes the upper half of the background and makes an organic halo around His head. This vibrance of color and density of detail are hallmarks of the authentic Varaha Kerala mural Painting. Note the lifelike eyes of the animal face, the perfect symmetry of the adornments on His body, and the complex brushstrokes that break the monotones in the background. Large Ashtabhuja-Dhari Ganesha Tanjore Painting The ashtabhujadhari Lord Ganesha, the one possessed of (‘dhari’) eight (‘ashta’) arms (‘bhuja’), stands on His short, chubby child’s legs. His adorable elephant head is turned sideways, revealing the lateral profile of His face to view. But for the gold predominating this Tanjore painting, it is a bitone composition in pale pink (the complexion of His form) and scarlet (the solid-colored background). Within the dark teakwood frame is a perfectly circular panel in the center. The surface area without the panel is superimposed with pure, solid gold. Zoom in on the same to appreciate the intricate workmanship of the engravings on the soft, thickly laid metal. Winged mythical creatures upon paisley-shaped vassals are to be found on all four corners surrounding the circular panel. Note the dense proportion of gold on the Lord’s person - from the attire and adornment on His body to the crown on His head and the sacred implements in His hands. The shringar and the circumference of the panel are particularly inlaid with richly colored beads of glass, which resemble rubies and emeralds. Such a glamorous Ganesha painting would be a valuable addition to the home or office of the truly devoted. Shakyamuni Buddha Thangka Brocadeless Painting And Acrylic Colors On Cotton Canvas A simple, time-tested image of the seated Shakyamuni. The epithet Shakyamuni refers to the rulership (‘muni’) of the Buddha’s family over the Shakya clan. It is a traditional thangka made with age-old painting techniques (acrylics, gouache) set off by subtle metallic infusions in pure 24K gold. Everything about this thangka is in keeping with the traditional iconography of the Buddha. Legs gathered in the perfect padmasana. The alms bowl in the palm of the left hand, the right hand in bhoomisparsha mudra. The robe, more expressive of His divine glamour than of His ihalokiya years of mendicancy, draped over one shoulder and brought down over the other. What sets this thangka apart is the rich, deep, almost dark color palette. The ochre complexion of the Buddha’s body is set off by an earth-colored robe.
