Society is informed about diverse items, uses, best prices, safe handling of dangerous goods, efficient use of scarce resources such as petroleum and electricity, technical breakthroughs, and so on through advertisements. Society would have stayed less informed if it hadn't been for Black Advertising.

The removal of official adverts from the media is another form of Black Advertising used by African regimes to suppress media freedom. Although this method is difficult to label as punitive, it can aid the government in maintaining control over the media. This technique has also resulted in the government employing "back-door soft censorship" to discourage critical reporting.
