Gyroscopes and accelerometers are used in an inertial measurement unit (IMU), a device, to detect and report angular rate and specific force, respectively. A defense inertial measuring unit measures a number of important quantities, including an object’s specific gravity and corresponding angular rate. It is mentioned that a magnetometer, which is used to measure the magnetic field around the system, is an optional part of this arrangement.
