Auntie F. came in announcing dramatically that Hitler is coming tomorrow, at which my father remarked that he would, now that he's just finished papering upstairs. At the outbreak of World War Two, May Smith was twenty-four. She lived in a small village near Derby with her parents, and taught at the local elementary school. The war brought many changes: evacuees arrived in the village; nights were broken by the wail of the siren as bombers flew overhead; the young men of May's circle donned khaki and disappeared to far-flung places to "do their bit". But a great deal remained the same: May still enjoyed tennis parties, holidays to Llandudno and going shopping for new outfits - coupons and funds permitting. And it was during these difficult times that May fell in love. These Wonderful Rumours! gives a unique and surprising insight into life on the Home Front. Through May Smith's observant, witty and sometimes acerbic diary, we gain a new understanding of how the people of Britain coped with the uncertainty, the heartbreak and the black comedy of life during wartime.

This book describes my fifth trip to Alaska where, according to Jack London, once you visit that northern region of the world, it takes a firm hold of your spirit, and you want to return some day. In the summer of 2014, I made a relatively comfortable road trip for six weeks in my 2008 Lexus SUV with which I pulled a 17-foot custom-made travel trailer that cost $30,000. It had a cozy bed, air conditioner, solar power, and a tiny "wet bath" in which I could almost accomplish my toilet business and take a shower at the same time. I didn't have a great deal of RVing experience under my belt, but it didn't matter to me because I was willing to learn the ropes of RVing and enjoy (or suffer) any consequences along the road. I'm an adventurer by heart. I love to visit new places, meet new people, and experience new ways of living. I'm a free spirit willing to take chances just for the fun of it. I spent over 200 hours preparing for this latest journey by reading many books and articles about traveling to the Arctic region. Because my trailer was almost new, it was in excellent condition; I simply washed it and loaded it with food, dishes, utensils, a small pot, a frying pan, clothing, toiletries, several other personal items, a laptop computer, and maps. I also bought an extra spare tire and rim for the RV. On June 5, 2014 I left my home in Lynden, Washington (state) for the Land of the Midnight Sun, where many exciting adventures awaited me just up the road. I hope you enjoy reading about them. Length: 54 pages

We've designed this booklet for the "Hotel on Wheels" group. This is for the family that will not only go to an RV Park and hang by the fire, but one that wants to explore the country, see new places and bond. From locations to products, we will attempt to provide a basic overview to make your future journeys with your family as fun and adventure filled as possible. Our lives have transformed! We've tripled our amount of traveling and have seen a great deal of the country in the comfort of what we call "our second home". We want to take what we've learned so far and pass it along to all who may benefit from enjoying "The RV" way.

A different kind of travel book, See Sedona couples a guidebook with a photobook-51 photos of the places you want to see. Use this book as a day-by-day guide to fill a week or use its suggestions to explore even more of this unique area. Wendy's personal approach includes informational links and ideas that conventional guidebooks often miss. Included are directions to ease navigation and places to pick up additional information and sight-seeing tips. There are histories, descriptions, and details about the sites you will visit. Wendy answers your questions too. How did Sedona get its name? Where can you find fish-or wine-in the desert? Why did the ancient peoples abandon their homes in Tuzigoot and Palatki? Why was the "Stupid Motorist Law" necessary? Where's the best shopping in Sedona? What are some great restaurants? Where's the ideal spot to enjoy a Sedona Sunset? What's a vortex? Why should you be prepared to have many WHOA! moments As a professional photographer, Wendy packs See Sedona with photographs to pique your interest. If you are thinking of going to China to teach or travel then don't - not until you have read this book. The book may entice you to go or it may persuade you to stay. Either way if you are interested in China and wish to advance far beyond the tourist guide view, then read this book. The author lived in one of the most famous cities in China, yet few in the West have heard of it. He also lived near the epicentre of the most damaging earthquake in recorded history, yet it is long forgotten. China is so big that it hides behind itself so you need a book that takes you beyond the veil: this is that book. It is not a detailed study of the country, yet reveals the heart of the place through insightful revelations. You will enjoy the accounts of teaching and travelling which are sometimes funny, sometimes sad. You will be surprised and shocked at the descriptions of school life and the life of the poor. You will begin to understand the very real cultural differences between the West and China and learn how to cope with them. You will also learn how to buy beer in Chinese restaurants. Rob Walters' book spotlights the fundamental problem facing the foreign teacher in China and provides a solution. It is entertaining and informative and, since it is based on two separate visits, gives a sense of China's unending paradox: its stability and its ability to cope with rapid change.

100 Things to Do in Los Angeles Before You Die Whether you're a local or just visiting, trying to figure out what to do in Los Angeles can be equal parts exciting and overwhelming. Between the infamous beaches and boulevards and the mixed bag of cultures and cuisines, L.A. has got a lot to offer. Grab a breakfast burrito in the morning, indulge in a Korean spa treatment in the afternoon and catch a movie at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery that night, and you'll discover how diverse our city can be. 100 Things to Do in Los Angeles Before You Die will not only clue you in on mischievous late-night bike rides downtown and which bars have the best aerial view of the city, but it will also be the friend you need that says it's okay to ditch the Hollywood Walk of Fame and go look for the Sprinkles Cupcake ATM instead. Suggestions highlight each of L.A.'s varied neighborhoods, what activities are kid friendly and what you can do seasonally and year-round. Los Angeles is the backdrop of all of Carrie Kim's favorite memories. Between countless bowls of Canter's matzo ball soup, too many hours on the LACMA campus to count and a fascination with the eras gone by that never wanes, L.A. is her happy place that both comforts and inspires. A freelance writer and designer, Carrie enjoys time away from her computer screen by playing tour guide to potential Angelenos-in-training, hitting as many restaurants, museums and iconic live music venues as possible, and of course, learning more about Los Angeles than she knew the weekend before.

Served by dozens of daily flights from cities all around the world, Puerto Rico is unusually easy to reach, balmy and warm throughout the year, full of fine beaches, pools and golf courses, blessed with historic sights and museums, jammed with good quality lodgings, restaurants and shops-and inexpensive-to-moderate to enjoy. But instead of drowning the reader in massive descriptions of the places that vacationers use, our author confines himself to a smaller, but still comprehensive, list of preferences-his own several favorites in every price range. He is John Marino, a distinguished journalist on a San Juan, Puerto Rico, daily newspaper, and no one knows Puerto Rico (including Vieques and Culebra) better than him. Frommer's is proud to have snared such a skilled and experienced observer as the author of our guide to this popular U.S. Commonwealth.

Cambodia, a country of immense natural beauty, stunning historical heritage, yet scarred by the most brutal and insane suffering imposed upon it by one of its own people in the recent past. The people of Cambodia are as friendly and warm as the sunshine that so readily shines on the million rice paddies but can also make the capital Phnom Penh a veritable dustbowl outside of the rainy season. Take your time to explore this gem of a country, enjoy the myriad of markets, the food stalls and restaurants. Make sure to check the weather patterns before planning a visit there though - in the rainy season you'll need more than sturdy boots to cope with the copious quantity of water that regularly falls from the sky. It's possible to stay in the most modern accommodation and miss the feel of the place, in which case you've not been to the Cambodia that I have had the fortune to visit. You sleep well as well of course! JACK TAYLOR BOOKS OFFER EASY TO READ STORIES AND LOT OF ORIGINAL PHOTOS.
