Dealers of antiques and vintage furnishings are the ultimate design trendsetters, setting the styles that are followed by decorators, manufacturers and, ultimately, consumers. With extensive knowledge of design history and an instinct for sniffing out undiscovered treasures and diamonds in the rough, the leading dealers hand-pick the furniture, artwork and objects that personalize the spaces we inhabit. In their own homes, these dealers have the opportunity to let their imaginations run wild and to display what is, for them, the cream of the crop. With exquisite samples of rare furniture; exhaustingly curated collections of art and objects; an innate sense of taste, color, scale and proportion; and a bit of humor, the dealers design environments for themselves that can serve as compelling examples to anyone striving to create a singular home. Dealer's Choice: At Home with Purveyors of Antique and Vintage Furnishings features lush color photographs of the homes of the world's foremost antiquaires. Included are the houses, apartments, lofts, and even castles of dealers specializing in mid-century modernist furniture and objects, antiquities and antique European decorative works. These residences in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, East Hampton, Paris, Istanbul and elsewhere illustrate the finest and most personal creations of the leading tastemakers in interior design.

From the remarkable pen of Peter Connolly comes a comprehensive look at the ancient city of Pompeii. He begins with the scientific facts: How was Pompeii destroyed? How did Mount Vesuvius become an active volcano? What happened during the eruption? How long did Pompeii lay buried and how was it finally rediscovered? What was Pompeii's history before the disaster? Then, Peter Connolly does what he does better than anyone-he rebuilds the past in words and pictures, allowing us to imagine what it was like to live in old Pompeii. Like an archaeological detective, he sifts through the ruins and artifacts to reconstruct one area of the town in minute detail. With maps and cross-sections, photographs, drawings, and engrossing, fact-filled text, Connolly takes us into the very homes of its citizens-into the kitchens, atriums, bedrooms and out into the gardens. We learn what the furniture looked like, how the homes were lighted and heated, what kind of jewelry was popular, and what the gladiators wore. We view the varied styles of architecture and decoration, attend a grand dinner party, visit local shops, go to the theater, to a public bath, and to the gladiators' arena. We gain an understanding of this ancient civilization, and begin to see how much was lost when the city fell prey to the tons of lava and ashes that fell on it during the devastating disaster.

The Arts and Crafts Movement espoused values of simplicity, craftsmanship and beauty quite counter to Victorian and Edwardian industrialism. Though most famous for its architecture, furniture and ornamental work, between the 1890s and the 1930s the movement also produced gardens all over Britain whose designs, redolent of a lost golden era, had worldwide influence. These designs, by luminaries such as Gertrude Jekyll and Sir Edwin Lutyens, were engaging and romantic combinations of manor-house garden formalism and the naive charms of the cottage garden - but from formally clipped topiary to rugged wild borders, nothing was left to chance. Sarah Rutherford here explores the winding paths and meticulously shaped hedges, the gazebos and gateways, the formal terraces and the billowing border plantings that characterised the Arts and Crafts garden, and directs readers and gardeners to where they can visit and be inspired by these beautiful works of art.

The pool is an aspirational motif that recurs across the history of residential architecture, no matter which era or location. From the impressive palace baths of Europe and the magnificent pools of luxurious mansions and country estates, to the stylish and contemporary designer terraces and the humble, tucked away inner-city courtyards of the average home-in all structures the themes of style, engineering, and design are standard. In Pools: Design and form with water, renowned photographer Miquel Tres' spectacular full-color images and detailed narratives showcase a wide selection of pool designs from around the world. This book features a multitude of examples in a wide range of styles: natural chemical-free pools with purifying systems; rustic pools which USE local materials and natural depuration methods in sometimes rural settings; contemporary dazzlers and designer pools for interior and exterior spaces, including illuminated designs and other modern features. Pools will help the aspiring landscape or interior designer to determine the latest trends and to consider strong garden contexts and landscape planning, outdoor pool-site plans, materials and furniture.

If you dream of decorating (or redecorating) your home but have no idea where to begin, this decorating workshop-in-a-book decodes an interior designer's thought process on creating a stylish home with vision and flow. The secret to those gorgeous interiors in the magazines lies not in the things that fill the rooms, but in the "decorating story" or point of view that the designer has applied to the space. With How to Decorate, learn how to create your own design concept and implement it with color, furniture, fabrics, lighting, accessorizing, and styling. This book also helps solve a decorator s biggest challenges, from working around a home's existing architecture and organizing a space, to mixing patterns and editing collections. Best of all, 150 color photographs and charming watercolor illustrations-and even a bookplate for personalizing this guide-provide inspiration that makes this book as useful as it is beautiful. Among the insider tips is information on: -Finding a dedicated space where you can organize paint samples, fabric swatches, and magazine clippings -Choosing a sofa wisely -Determining appropriate wall finishes and textures -Identifying what fabrics are right for you -Styling your decor to reinvigorate your space -Plus, the best suppliers for rugs, linens, accessories, and more "Interior design should be about telling a personal story, and Shannon Fricke has nailed it on the head with How to Decorate. Her genius tips ring true for novice and professional decorators alike, and her decorating workshop-in-a-book organization helps simplify what can be a very intimidating process. This book will empower and motivate you to tell your personal story through your home decor. Bravo, Shannon!" - Jenny Komenda, designer and founder of Little Green Notebook "How to Decorate throws out stuffy notions of doing things the 'right' way and instead invites us to imagine our homes as playgrounds for authentic self-expression. Fricke promotes the idea of decorating at its best, as a means of creating surroundings that reflect who we really are and what we love. while having a blast in the process!" - Camille Styles, event designer and editor of CamilleStyles.com "Shannon strikes the elusive balance between visual inspiration and practicable action. This is a book you'll both display and put to constant use." - Anne Sage, blogger and founder of The City Sage

Stephen Crafti has always been drawn to black houses, irrespective of the materials they are constructed in, be they zinc, timber or simply painted. Unlike most houses, which scream for attention, black houses sit quietly, accentuating the often-verdant landscape. There is also a sense of calm and tranquillity with a black home. Crafti doesn't live in a black house, but he recently upgraded a 1930's home. 'Everything I touched was changed to black, from the timber fences to the timber floorboards'. He even added black curtains and planted black bearded irises in his garden. Using black seemed to unify disparate elements in and around his home. While there are numerous black features in Crafti's home, his ideal scenario would be to live in a contemporary black house, with black furniture and black walls. And maybe even a garden filled with black plants. This book, showcasing black houses, is the starting point to this goal and will be organised according to the following themes: Black Exteriors; Living in Black; Details of Black; Kitchens & Dining in Black; and In Black And White.
